Blogging 101: Top 5 Smart Tips to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Blogging is one of the easiest ways to increase your exposure and credibility in the online community. But I’ve seen many bloggers flounder when it comes to increasing the traffic to their blog.

While it is easy to set up a blog with WordPress or other platforms, grabbing the attention of the target audience is what most people fail to achieve.

You can have the best design, tools, and features in your blog, but without the proper elements that increase your exposure, I can say for sure, you cannot go anywhere with blogging.

Blogging 101-Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Here are some powerful tips that’ll drive traffic to your blog largely.

Regular Posts

Setting up a blog is just the first step. The main part is maintaining and updating it regularly. I’ve seen many bloggers start out on full throttle, but lose their enthusiasm in a couple of weeks.

While for some it is because they’ve exhausted all possible ideas, for others it is because they don’t get any immediate response and give up on the whole idea.

But with regular posts, you can definitely boost traffic to your blog. Here are some statistics to prove this.

  • When you increase the frequency of the posts, you can see your leads increasing in direct proportion
  • Blogging reaches your audience more effectively than advertising
  • Companies with 200 and more blog posts have better leads than those that have only a few posts

Initially I’d suggest writing on all week-days for the first 2-3 months.

Once you have 50 or so posts, you can reduce the posts to 2-3 times a week.

If you are too busy to contribute, have guest posts or hire writers but make sure you edit and check the posts for relevancy.

Keep writing down ideas for posts whenever you think of them. This will help when you run out of topics to write about.

A post need not be filled with content for all time. Shorten the content and include more images and graphics to make it look more attractive and easy work for you.

Setting up Social Media

Social media is without doubt the best tool you can use to promote your blog. In fact, I strongly advocate, giving it more importance in your blog.

The easiest and quickest way to optimize for social media is to include a plugin or widget that adds the social sharing buttons that are easy for readers to share.

Spend time on the social network that is right for your blog regularly for a month until you make the right connections and build your followers’ list.

Social Media setting-up

Interaction with other bloggers is necessary. Subscribe to a couple of blogs in your niche that you admire and comment in the blogs.

Make sure you link back to your blog if the topic is relevant to any of your posts.

While a full-fledged social media optimization can be expensive, you can always include social sharing without spending much.

You can use Buffer as Matthew Barby has suggested in this post, to schedule all your social media posts to get maximum exposure.

Tweak Your Posts

In my opinion stopping with great content is not enough to generate traffic. You should develop you own style, use the right type of keywords, top quality inbound links, and proper page construction.

Good page and domain level authority is necessary to be noticed by search engines.

To garner attention, use the post formats including images, videos, links, quotes, galleries, chat, audio, short snippets, and status that are collectively termed as asides, to add your own special touch.

These do not need technical expertise, as your theme will take care of it depending on the post format you pick.

In case your theme doesn’t have post format, you can add your own style like embedding a video with some short comment or using single sentence asides.

Add an audio file, and to add more perspective to your image, write a story to go with it. A photo essay is also a great idea.

I’ve found that the more tools of communication you use the better is your reach. For more ideas on tweaking content, have a look at this post from

  1. Hi Nisha!

Solid tips here for sure. Across all of my sites, the biggest sender of return traffic is through my email list. Of course, you have to attract your leads an alternate way initially so the other methods you mentioned are good for achieving exactly that.

People often ask me what the best way to get traffic is, but the truth is that there is no one way. It depends on so many factors like niche, target audience, level of authority etc. that you can’t just give a single answer. I think a good mix of several techniques like you mentioned here is the key to attracting the maximum amount of traffic possible.

    Thanks Nisha!

  31. Hi Nisha,

Great tips to follow. I think “know your audience” is one of the most important for traffic generation. You should know who is your audience, what they require and what they will receive from your site and then only you will able to stop them on your site. Also “quality content” with respect to your targeted audience is also important to boost traffic to blog.

Thanks for sharing post with us.
