While on-page SEO will not automatically get you on the first page of Google search results, it’s still an important ranking factor.

This means focusing on a specific keyword for each page of content.  There are a few simple SEO rules to follow with keywords and page content.

Make sure the keyword is in the title of the page.  The keyword should also be included in the first paragraph and last paragraph of content.  A general rule after that is to include it at least once for every 100 total words of content.

This will not magically get you a great ranking but it will make sure the search engines understand the focus of your content.

Be sure to include variations of the keyword as well.  The best way to do this is to write for your visitors and not the search engines.  By doing so, you’ll naturally use other keywords related to your topic.

Let’s say you are writing about Liverpool FC.  Your article would most likely include words like Mohamed Salah, Klopp, and Premier League.  This gives the search engines all they need to understand the topic of your content.

The structure of the page is also very important.  The content should be laid out in a manner that makes it easy for visitors to read.

Don’t include long paragraphs.  Break up the content every few hundred words with relevant headings that let readers know what the next section of content is going to be about.

Use things like numbers, tables and bullet points where appropriate.

Probably the most important factor for Google is the user experience of their visitors.  If Google does not provide the answers searchers want, they won’t use the Google search engine.

This means Google wants sites that provide high quality, high value content.  What is high quality content?  It’s content that gives the visitor all the information they need on the topic.

This content should also be in depth.  While a high word count does not mean the content is high quality, Google does tend to give better rankings to longer content.

If you want your content to have a good chance of ranking on the first page of Google for any given keyword, be sure and include content that is at least one thousand words long, if not longer.

By providing quality content to your visitors, you’ll get a boost from a couple of other ranking factors that Google finds important.  They are both relevant to the user experience.

The amount of time visitors spend on your site matters.  If you provide quality content that answers their search, they will stay on your site and Google will reward you with improved rankings.

If they go to your site and immediately go back to the search results, Google will see this as a signal that your site does not provide the answer people want and your ranking will drop.

Another ranking factor that has to do with your content quality is social signals. While no one but Google knows exactly how important this is, the amount of times your content is shared on social media does matter.

Social signals and the time a visitor spends on your site are what the search engines use to decide if your content is high quality and provides a good user experience.
