An Introduction to WordPress

The reason that so many people choose WordPress is because it is the easiest one to use. There are also plenty of resources available that will help you through pretty much any task that you could ever need to do. From optimising an image to installing a plugin, there will be a YouTube video or online guide there to walk you through.

When you are looking at choosing a web host, always check that it has strong reviews related to how well it works with WordPress. All of the popular web hosting services offer a great level of support and easy one-click installation for WordPress. If you are certain that you want to use WordPress, than definitely choose a host that is recommended by the experts for website owners choosing WordPress.

Creating Pages

Creating pages and editing pages in WordPress is fairly easy compared to other more complicated CMS platforms. When you set up your account with your host and install WordPress, you will log in and go to what is called the ‘Dashboard’. You will get to everything you need through this area. You create new pages here and you can create a hierarchy using the Parent/Child options when you add a page. So for example, if you want to have a dropdown under a page called ‘Our Services’ that goes into more details about each service offered.

Formatting

Adding text is really easy in the Visual Editor, you simply click in the editor box and type whatever text you want to add. If you want to add an image, you do this via the ‘Add media’ button. You can highlight text to format it using the toolbar with similar icons that you will have seen in the formatting toolbar within Word. So you will see icons for bold, italic, bullets, speech marks, alignment and adding hyperlinks.

Remember that you want the page to be as easy to read as possible, so make sure you use headers, bold and bullets to break up text into sections that are easier to absorb for the website user. Also, make sure that you use paragraphs, as a long block of text on a page is never going to be appealing for a reader.

Once you have added a title for your page (it will be referred to as post) and you add your content into the Visual editor, you can check what it looks like using the preview option. It is recommended that you always preview your content to double check that everything is in working order before you click on the publish button. However, if you do click publish, you can quickly revert back to a previous version of the page (if there is one).

Content Updation

Another pointer is that you should make sure that your content stays up to date, as not only will this improve your website’s credibility with visitors, it will also increase your website’s credibility with the search engines. Search engines will play a big part in the success of your website and how many people visit your website, so it is worthwhile looking into SEO. You can also get plugins that will help your site to improve in terms of SEO, such as Yoast.
