Apple and Google have the largest app stores for their devices. There is hardly any other competition that could come near the App Store or Google Play Store. Amazon aims to change that.
The online retail giant has been working on its own Android-based app store for some time. As part of its latest promotion, Amazon will now be offering paid apps for free in its Unlocked section.
Many popular developers and apps are listed in the Unlocked section. This includes names like Sega America, UsTwo, OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter, Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords among others. Amazon’s appstore has free and paid apps.
The free apps have in-app purchases. But the Unlocked section allows all these apps for free.
Amazon hasn’t revealed any information about the full-release of Unlocked or the apps it will be including in it. Even the participating developers cannot reveal any information, as they claim.
Amazon plans to use its social profiles and other platforms for promoting Unlocked. It is aimed at increasing the volume of downloads for its Amazon app. You will have to install the Amazon app for accessing the Unlocked apps.
If you download an Unlocked app, Amazon will keep sending you new notifications whenever a new app is available for free. When you browse the Appstore from within the Amazon app, you will also be able to filter the searches to get results with Unlocked apps. When you choose an app to download, you will be provided recommendations.
Unlocked is an effort from Amazon to enhance activity on its own Amazon app. It has been part of Amazon’s strategy to offer freebies and bigger discounts. The new strategy is expected to up the level of competition in its segment. Google, Apple and other app stores will be watching out for how the new promotion from Amazon works.
